The latest money news from Ann CatesWASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd plans to introduce a revised version of sweeping bank reform legislation on Monday, according to a statement from the Connecticut senator's office on Thursday. Dodd had hoped to release a bipartisan bill, but in his statement Dodd indicated that he was unable to do so. "It has always been my goal to produce a consensus package," Dodd said. "And we have reached a point where bringing the bill to the full committee is the best course of action to achieve that end." He plans to have the 22 senators on the committee vote on the bill on March 22.NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Retail stocks fell Thursday, led by Bed, Bath & Beyond Inc. , after the home-furnishings retailer was cut to underperform from market perform by FBR Capital Markets. The S&P Retail Index fell 0.3% to 435.05. Bed, Bath & Beyond dropped 1.7%. Men's Wearhouse Inc. declined 5.2% after the men's clothing retailer reported worse than expected fourth-quarter sales. Hot Topic Inc. shares fell 2.2%. It gave a first-quarter outlook that may miss analysts' estimates. Among the gainers, children's clothing retailer Gymboree Corp. rose 7.3% after its fourth-quarter profit topped Street expectations and its first-quarter outlook also may exceed estimates.SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Technology stocks fell along with the broad market Thursday as concerns about rising prices in China and the state of the U.S. economy dragged the sector down. Decliners included Microsoft Corp. , Intel Corp. , Apple Inc. and Yahoo Inc. . The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 7 points to 2,342, while the Morgan Stanley High Tech 35 Index and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index were also in the red.NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Energy stocks fell in early action on Thursday, as oil dropped below $82 a barrel and the broad market slipped. The NYSE Arca Oil Index dipped 0.2% to 1,069, pulling back from gains in the previous session. The NYSE Arca Natural Gas Index dropped 0.2% to 554. The Philadelphia Oil Service Index fell 0.9% to 210.
Oil futures fell 16 cents to $81.93. Exxon Mobil rose 4 cents to $67.26. Devon Energy rose 0.5% to $72.24. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 25 points.U.S. stocks opened lower Thursday following a smaller-than-expected drop in weekly jobless and as concerns over tightening in China weighed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 27 points, or 0.3%, to 10541, in early trading. Shares of American parent AMR Corp. fell 1.5% to $9.82, United parent UAL Corp. slipped 1.2% to $18.74 and JetBlue Airways shed 1% to $5.22. The Nasdaq Composite Index dipped 8.08 points to 2,350.87.BP and Devon's $7 billion deal is only the latest move in the Brazilian oil boom.
